Design and Manufacturing Standards
1.1 AWWA C509
· Design Principles:
· Follows ASME B16.34 for general valve design (pressure-temperature ratings, dimensional requirements).
· Wedge-type single disc or double disc design; seals can be metal-faced or resilient (e.g., rubber lining).
1.2 AWWA C515
· Design Principles:
· Specifically designed for resilient seating (rubber or plastic-coated disc) to achieve bubble-tight sealing (leakage ≤0.01% of rated flow).
· Optimized structure to reduce water hammer effects; supports bi-directional sealing (no flow direction restriction).
· Manufacturing Requirements:
· Rubber seals must pass ASTM D2000 tests for hardness, tensile strength, and aging resistance.
· Body may be coated with epoxy (per AWWA C550) for corrosion protection.
2. Face-to-Face Dimensions (End-to-End Lengths)
Common Standards:
· Flanged ends follow AWWA C208 (equivalent to ASME B16.1 cast iron flanges or ASME B16.5 steel flanges).
· Butt-weld or socket-weld ends reference ASME B16.10 for face-to-face dimensions.
3. Flange Standards
3.1 Flange Types Supported:
· AWWA C509/C515 both comply with:
· ANSI/ASME B16.1: Cast iron flanges (Class 125/150) for low-pressure systems (≤200 psi).
· ANSI/ASME B16.5: Steel flanges (Class 150/300) for medium/high-pressure systems (≤600 psi).
· AWWA C207: Ductile iron flanges (for AWWA C509 bodies).
3.2 Face Types:
· Flanges can have flat faces (FF) or raised faces (RF); resilient seated valves typically use RF flanges for better sealing.
· Gaskets comply with ASME B16.21 (non-metallic flat gaskets) or API 605 (spiral-wound gaskets).
4. Pressure Test Standards
4.1 Shell Test (Hydrostatic)
· Common Requirement for Both Standards:
· Test pressure: 1.5 × rated working pressure (e.g., 225 psi for 150 psi rated valves).
· Hold time: ≥10 minutes; no visible leakage or structural damage allowed.
4.2 Seat Test (Leakage Test)
· AWWA C509:
· Metal seals: Allow minor leakage (per API 598, ≤40 bubbles/min for DN100).
· Resilient seals: Must achieve bubble-tight sealing (≤0.01% leakage).
· AWWA C515:
· Mandatory resilient seals: Bi-directional test at 1.1 × rated pressure for 5 minutes; no visible leakage permitted.
4.3 Optional Low-Pressure Air Test:
Some manufacturers require ASTM D1603 testing (5 psi air pressure, leakage ≤0.1 std ft³/hr)
